British Value Statement
At Laygate Community School we value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all our pupils and families and we undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate these. We have found this approach to be enriching for everyone as it teaches tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and the wider world. Underpinning all this, are a range of curriculum topics which have strong links to the British Empire.
Our Foundation Stage staff ensure that children know and use basic manners within all areas of school life. They are encouraged and praised for this so that the children understand how important manners are. Throughout their time in Foundation Stage the children learn about people within the local community and how important belonging to a community is.
In Year 5 and 6, pupils are learning about World War One and the impact that had on the British Empire and British society today. This is linked with the annual Poppy Day celebrations where children purchase poppies and a minute’s silence is held. Children from Year 6 take part in the Remembrance Sunday Parade which takes place in the local community.
In KS1, there is a strong focus on the work of local heroes both past and present. The children really enjoy learning about how local people have had an impact on our community.
In recent years, we celebrated the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and the birth of Prince George with special assemblies and themed lessons.
Generally, our assemblies uphold traditional values of empathy, respect and tolerance. These are also taught within formal SEAL, PSHE and RE lessons and on an informal nature throughout the school days. In PSHE children discuss racism and take part in the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ initiative to develop a sense of identity within the wider community.
Where possible we emphasise the British Value of democracy and having the right to a vote. The whole school are involved in the elections of the School Council representatives and House Captains and Vice House Captains.
