Visit to The Word

29th January 2020K Millican

We loved our visit to the word. We found out about space, our universe and what different planets were called. We had the opportunity to design our own planets and aliens. We then went to read books in the area. Some of us were then using the magnets to write words.

Surprise Pantomime!

29th January 2020K Millican

We had a wonderful surprise of a pantomime in school. The show was Aladdin and we loved it. We loved singing and clapping along. Mrs Houghton was even chosen to get up and dance.

School Council Meeting – KS2 Yard Improvements

23rd January 2020K Millican

Recently, the School Council met with a gentleman called Graham Whitehead. He is the project manager for our School building.

As you know the school yard is currently under repair and the School Council decided it would be a good idea if some of the surface could be replaced with Astro turf. They asked the other pupils in school for their opinion by issuing a questionnaire. The majority of the school thought it would be a good idea.

Today the School Council delivered a presentation to Graeme around this idea and some of the work they have done towards it. He was very impressed and is going to discuss this with the rest of his team and get back to us. Fingers crossed.

Watch this space!……

Working hard in Year 4-5

17th December 2019K Millican
In Year 4/5 we have studied the Tudors. We found out about the kinds of clothes worn by the Tudors and created our own designs for rich Tudor people.
Then we looked at the construction of Tudor houses before making model Tudor houses of our own. We tried to recreate the timber frames and the ‘jetty’ which is the overhanging upper floor of the Tudor house.
Also we looked at the Tudor family tree and we found out the meaning behind the Tudor rose. The red petals represent the House of Lancaster and the white petals represent the House of York.
In RE we have looked at how religious care for others. First of all we found out about the Golden Rule which focuses on the idea that we should treat others as we would like to be treated. We found out that all religions have a similar rule and we made a display to show this.
We found out about the Langar meal which is served at the Gurdwara. We recreated the meal by preparing and serving vegetarian food. This is because Sikhs would be able to serve food to everyone regardless of their religion. We sat in rows. This is to help the service of the food but also Sikhs do this to show that regardless of background, religion, gender or age everyone is welcome and treated equally.

Year 3 Centre for Life Visit

17th December 2019K Millican

Year 3 will be learning about Neil Armstrong in history and about forces in science so to get us excited about our learning, we went on a trip to the Centre for Life in Newcastle. We learnt about Apollo 11’s moon landing in 1969 and set up our own rocket investigations to test what force and angle was needed for our rockets to reach the ‘moon.’

We explored the space exhibition and had a lovely experience in the planetarium. The highlight of our trip was going ice skating on the outdoor ice rink. We all had an amazing time, and despite a few falls (including Miss Dodds), we picked ourselves back up and kept on trying with a smile on our faces.

Thank you for your contributions towards the trip that allowed us this great experience.

Miss Dodds

School Choir

17th December 2019K Millican

Last week Laygate Community School Choir performed twice in the local community.

On Tuesday 10th December they visited St Jude’s church and entertained some elderly residents whilst they had afternoon tea.

The Choir was very lucky as they were also treated to an afternoon tea themselves.

On Thursday 12th the Choir marched down to ‘The Word’ in South Shields marketplace and
entertained family members and the general public. They had a fantastic time and sang
their hearts out.

Well Done Choir!
